Flora and Fauna of Panama Exhibit Opens
Join Mr. Magoo and friends from the Pinellas Suncoast Parrot Sanctuary on Saturday, August 29th, at 10:00 am at the Panama Canal Museum for the opening of our new exhibit, Flora and Fauna of Panama. Mr. MaGoo, a 60 year old scarlet macaw named for a popular radio show in 1949, is just one of over 100 parrot “retirees” at the sanctuary. Mr. Magoo will accompany Capt. Tut, a.k.a Capt. Robert Barrett, who also happens to be the son and grandson of Panama Canal Zone residents.
As a Certified Veterinary Technician, as well as a Certified Avian Specialist and Bird Behavior Consultant, Capt. Tut has worked with parrots for over 35 years. He has given bird lectures to the bird industry, both here in Florida and in California; worked with the entertainment industry on Animal Planet specials and Disney World’s Animal Kingdom; and co-hosted the national radio program, “Talkin’ Pets.” He has said, on more than one occasion, “I’m on the bird’s side.” Pinellas Suncoast Parrot Sanctuary, Inc., is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
The land bridge that the Isthmus of Panama forms between North and South America gives rise to a magnificent variety of bird, mammal, reptile, fish, and plant life. The mighty Harpy eagle, tiny jewel-like hummingbirds, jaguars, iguanas, golden frogs, sloths, square trees, and exotic flowers all combine to make this strip of land one of the most bio-diverse places on the planet. The museum hopes that this exhibit will entice you to explore Panama’s natural beauty.
The Mission of the Panama Canal Museum is to document, interpret, and articulate the role played by the United States in the history of Panama, with emphasis on the construction, operation, maintenance and defense of the Panama Canal and the contributions to its success by people of all nationalities.
Admission to the museum is free, but donations are welcome. We are located at 7985 113th Street, Suite 100, Seminole, FL, at the north end of the Seminole Mall parking lot in the Seminole Office Center. Museum hours are Monday – Saturday, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. For more information call 727-394-9338.
