Recently, several members have asked about the museum’s Wall of Honor and its “In Memoriam Program” and wanted to know how their contributions are applied. Below are some questions and answers that may help members learn more about this program

1.   What is the Wall of Honor?
2.   What is so special about the museum’s Wall of Honor?
3.   If I make my $24 annual dues payment and then contribute another $100 to the museum, what amount is applied on the Wall of Honor to my transit through the Canal?
4.   Can my contributions be in memory of a friend or relative? Can my dues count toward this as well?
5.   May I contribute in the memory of or in honor of more than one individual?
6.   Can other museum members and donors contribute to individuals someone else has already designated?
7.   If I make a contribution in memory of a friend or loved one, will the next of kin of that individual be notified?

Question: What is the Wall of Honor?

Answer: The Wall of Honor is the museum’s way of recognizing all its donors. Everyone who has given financial support to the museum will have his or her name posted on the Wall. There are three sections on the Wall of Honor. The “Donor” section lists all donors and dues-paying members since the museum’s inception. An “In Memoriam” section recognizes individuals in whose memory money has been contributed to the museum. An “In Honor Of” section recognizes individuals in whose honor money has been contributed.

Question: What is so special about the museum’s Wall of Honor?

Answer: The Wall of Honor is unique to the Panama Canal Museum, in that it shows levels of donations by locations along a theoretical Panama Canal. The concept is designed to allow individuals to “transit the Canal” based on amounts they contribute to the museum. Beginning at the Pacific end of the Canal, one can proceed in $100 increments through 15 different locations along the Canal until completing a transit at the Atlantic Breakwater. Contributions are cumulative, so that over a period of time and with ongoing contributions, one can continue to move toward the completion of a full transit. We have several members who have already completed a number of transits.

Question: If I make my $24 annual dues payment and then contribute another $100 to the museum, what amount is applied on the Wall of Honor to my transit through the Canal?

Answer: The entire amount – dues plus any additional contributions – is credited to your Canal transit. The additional amounts over your dues payments, of course, will help expedite your transit.

Question: Can my contributions be in memory of a friend or relative? Can my dues count toward this as well?

Answer: All your contributions, including dues, can also be made in memory of or in honor of any individual or individuals you so designate. In that case, both your name and the name(s) of the person(s) you are memorializing or honoring will be credited jointly with the full amount of your contribution and both you in the “Donor” Section and they in the “In Memoriam” Section will move along the canal toward a complete transit.

Question: May I contribute in the memory of or in honor of more than one individual?

Answer: Yes. The amount you contribute can be apportioned among however many individuals you would like to memorialize. For example, if you donate $100 and want your contribution to be in memory of four individuals, you may designate $25 for each. You will be credited for $100 in the “Donor” Section and they each will be credited with $25 on the “In Memoriam” Section of the Wall of Honor. In this case, your transit will proceed more rapidly than those you are memorializing. If you were to designate the full amount to one person, you both would proceed at the same pace.

Question: Can other museum members and donors contribute to individuals someone else has already designated?

Answer: Yes. Many of our donors have designated their contributions to go to the memory of the same individual. In that case, the total amount of contributions for that individual has helped to expedite their transit through the Canal. Recently, we have found that, in lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy, many members are choosing to donate to the museum in the name of a recently deceased friend or loved one, which will permanently preserve their memory on the Wall of Honor.

Question: If I make a contribution in memory of a friend or loved one, will the next of kin of that individual be notified?

Answer: When a contribution is made in memory of an individual, at the request of the contributor, the museum will notify an individual specified by the contributor that such a donation has been made. At the time of the contribution, we will need the name and address of the person to whom the notification is to be made.
